A Study on the Death Awareness Among Health Care Personnels






Abstract
In order to search for the coping mechanism toward the death anxiety of dying patient and health care personnels, and to develop the educational programs in the university curriculum, a survey was performed to 550 cases of health care personnels including 116 nursing students, 238 medical students, 137 nurses, and 59 doctors.
Sampling were made through census procedure from the entire group of medical and nursing student in College of Medicine, Chung-Ang University, and of licenced nurses and doctors in Chung-Ang University Hospital, and in Han-Rim University Hospital.
The Major results are as follows:
1) More than half (52. 0%) of the subjects determined the highest level of awareness, 15. 6% was the moderate, and 32.3% was the low. It was revealed that the most frequently responded death perceiving motives are "psychological conflict(22.0%)" and "death of those around them(19.7%)". Among the death perceiving motives, it was determined that the highest level of death awareness are found by,"their own disease" "personality factors", "fatal illness of relatives" and the lowest level of death awareness are found by the "death of relatives".
2) Out of the top 10 death words, ,`grave¢¥ and `suicide¢¥ showed the highest level of death awareness. Out of the 8 categories of death words, `life¢¥, `Funeral service¢¥ `darkness¢¥ and `disease¢¥ showed the highest level of death awareness.
3) Out of top 10 life words, `Love¢¥ `New life¢¥ `Life¢¥ `Time¢¥ and `Vitality¢¥ showed the highest level of death awareness. Out of 8 categories of life words, `nature¢¥ `health¢¥ ¢¥time¢¥ and ¢¥love¢¥ showed the highest level of death awareness.
4) In personal data, higher level of death awareness ;was determined by the lower age group, low socioeconomic status, low educational level, no religion or oriental religion, last child, loss of one parent, and female group.
5) In the death-related variables, higher level of death awareness was determined by the number of the death and life associated words, no fatal illness of relatives, death of relatives, negative attitudes toward fatal illness, positive attitude toward death, and typical response of death and life oriented word.
